What’s the use of crying?

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you’ll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through, for you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

~ Charlie Chaplin

I had this song in my head this morning, then listened to different versions of it on Spotify. Nat King Cole, Natalie Cole, Michael Jackson, Tony Bennett, Josh Groban, Michael Buble, Diana Ross, Harry Connick Jr, Robert Downey Jr, even Westlife and Rod Stewart have all done their version of this classic song. My favourite was Barbra Streisand’s (no surprises there!). I find the song comforting and hope giving. The music is definitely more sad than uplifting (apart from Eric Clapton’s awful rendition), but the lyrics are inspiring.

While I was feeling hopeful, I came across a wonderfully inspiring blog post, which should be read by anyone who’s had to pick themselves up from one of life’s blows. Read it and hopefully you’ll feel uplifted too.
